Wintertaling Advised Sympower on €19 million Investment from PGGM to Accelerate European Energy Flexibility

Oct 24, 2025 – Amsterdam, Netherlands

Wintertaling is proud to have advised Sympower, Europe’s leading independent flexibility services provider, in securing a €19 million investment from Dutch pension investor PGGM, investing on behalf of PFZW, the Dutch health care pension scheme. This strategic investment extends Sympower’s Series B1 funding round to €42 million and marks an important milestone in Europe’s accelerating energy transition.

The funding will enable Sympower to scale its battery energy storage (BESS) optimisation solutions, expand through strategic mergers and acquisitions, and strengthen its position as a key player in the European flexibility market.

Wintertaling’s long-term partnership with Sympower

Wintertaling has been Sympower’s legal advisor since 2017, assisting the company in all its funding rounds, M&A transactions, and corporate matters as it has grown into a European market leader in energy flexibility.

The Wintertaling transaction team consisted of Tim Carapiet-Petit, Lisette Oosterveen, and Thom Schölvinck

A lot of our work is about building relationships.”, said Tim Carapiet-Petit, M&A Partner and head of the Startup/Scaleup practice. "We’re especially happy to have helped Sympower, a client we’ve been advising from its initial days as a young startup in 2017 to where they are now, operating in 10+ countries with over 200 employees, in securing this €19 million investment from PGGM. Energy flexibility services are essential for Europe’s energy transformation, and we’re proud to play a role in enabling that progress.

More details about the deal

With over 2.7 GW of flexible distributed energy assets under management across Europe and 0.5 GW of BESS projects already operating in the Nordics, Sympower is set to leverage this investment to further expand its capabilities and market reach. The company is also targeting new European markets following recent BESS service rollouts in Greece.PGGM joins Sympower’s Supervisory Board

PGGM manages over €250 billion in pension assets and has a strong focus on sustainable energy infrastructure through its Climate and Energy Transition Solutions (CETS) mandate, a €1 billion impact strategy dedicated to advancing Europe’s decarbonisation. The investment in Sympower is part of CETS’s goal to back innovative companies driving measurable CO₂ reduction across Europe.

Empowering the energy transition

Sympower’s technology and expertise in demand-side flexibility and battery storage are central to creating stronger, smarter, and more sustainable electricity grids across Europe. With PGGM’s backing, Sympower is now poised to accelerate its growth and deepen its impact in supporting the continent’s clean energy future.

Wintertaling congratulates Simon Bushell, and the entire Sympower team on this milestone and looks forward to continuing its support in the company’s next chapter of growth and innovation.
